Beginning Anew
Chapter One

Allie, wrapped in a blanket with her laptop sitting in her lap, had stayed home from work. She’d spent the whole day reading and researching, only taking breaks to pee and have something for lunch. She’d spent the last two hours trying to figure out how exactly she was going to start this conversation with Jacob, and nursing a bottle of wine.
They’d had a terrible fight the night before, and they both said some things they wished they could take back, but Allie had been particularly nasty. Jacob had called her spoiled, and Allie had sworn at him, telling him that she didn’t need him and would be just as happy without him in her life.
As soon as she’d said it, she regretted it, but then she looked at Jacob. His face twisted in anger, but just before that, pain. His eyebrows knotted above his eyes, almost hiding the defeat in them. She’d wanted to say something to make it better, wanted to take it back, but knew she couldn’t. He grabbed a pillow from the bed and stormed to the living room, and they hadn’t spoken since.
Remembering, Allie took another large gulp from the wine bottle, and wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. She scoured thousands of web pages on how to do what she was about to do. She wanted to make things right between her and Jacob, she wanted him to know that she didn’t mean a thing she’d said the night before, and that she needed him more than anything. She was terrified of losing him.
Finally, the sound of his keys in the lock startled Allie to reality. She snapped the laptop shut and put it on the end table beside the couch.
He pushed the door open, and almost started laughing at the sight of his fiancé. Her hair was a mess, a half empty bottle of wine sat beside her, and she was wearing the same clothes she’d gone to bed in the previous night. The only thing that stopped him was the look on her face, like she’d just seen a ghost. He didn’t say a thing, still slightly perturbed over their fight the night before. Jacob went to the kitchen, draped his coat over the back of a barstool, and went to the fridge. When he made his way back to the living room, Allie was drinking from the bottle of wine.
“I’m guessing you didn’t work today,” he said, sitting in the arm chair a few feet away.
She shook her head. She was starting to feel the effects of the wine, for sure. Digging deep inside herself for the courage to begin speaking, she lifted her eyes to meet his.
“Oh Jake, I’m so sorry for the things I said last night, I really didn’t mean them.” her sparkling blue eyes filled with tears but she pushed on. “I do need you. More than anything in the world, and if I didn’t have you … I’d … I’d be absolutely lost!”
Jacob came and sat beside her now, pulling her into his arms. “It’s okay, sweetheart. I know you didn’t mean it.”
Allie pulled back a little, shaking her head and sniffling. “No, it’s not okay.” she paused here, not knowing how to continue. Her stomach was in knots, fearing that he’d run as soon as she spilled her guts. “I did a lot of reading today, about a thing called Domestic Discipline, and I think that it’s something that would do a lot of good for our relationship.”
His eyebrow raised. “What, exactly, is domestic discipline?” he wanted to know.
She took another long drink of her wine before answering. “Well, the man is the head of the household, and he holds the final say. They come up with rules and talk about behaviors that need to be fixed, and then he enforces them. If she doesn’t do what she’s expected or told to do, then she gets punished.” she felt all the air empty from her lungs and waiting for his response, she wasn’t sure if she could refill them on her own. Allie pictured him looking at her in disgust and asking what kind of person would live that way? Why couldn’t she just act right on her own? Her heart felt like someone had clamped an iron fist around it, and was squeezing the life from her.
Instead of running off in horror or disgust, he looked at her with interest. “What do you mean, punished?” he asked.
This was going to be the hardest part, actually saying the word. Spanking. Allie was too embarrassed to meet his eye, and instead reached again for the wine bottle. After a few swigs, she continued. “Well, most couples use spanking,” the word came out in barely a whisper “But some use other forms of punishment, too, I guess. Like making the wife stand in the corner, write lines, restricting her use of the tv or computer. Whatever the head of house decides.” She stared down at the floor for a long while, too afraid to look at him for his reaction. She dug her toes into the carpet, sipping from the wine.
He didn’t know what to think. Spank his fiancé? It seemed kind of barbaric, to him. He’d been taught his whole life to never lay his hand on a woman. They were meant to be cherished, catered to. He couldn’t quite wrap his mind around it. He cleared his throat. “So you think that this domestic discipline could benefit us?” he asked.
    She nodded. “Yeah.”
    “Why?”
Allie swallowed hard. She knew that there were going to be a lot of questions to answer, but now that she was facing them, she didn’t know what to say. She tried to piece together words in her mind to make it sound exactly as she was thinking it. “Because you deserve to be respected, and I have a lot of unfavorable behaviors.” she said quietly. “I want to change,” she added, so meekly he almost didn’t hear her.
It was a lot to digest, and Jacob didn’t know how to react. As Allie reached for the wine bottle again, he instinctively picked it up and moved it away from her. “I don’t think you need any more of that,” he told her.
She hung her head, trying to imagine all the horrible things he was thinking about her. She wanted to say more, to ask what he thought, to wonder aloud if he thought she was losing her mind. Instead, she sat quietly, waiting in the torturous silence for him to say anything.
“I have to think about this, Al.” Jacob said quietly. His hand found hers and their fingers laced together. “It’s a lot to take in.”
Allie nodded. “Yeah, I mean, of course.” she still couldn’t bring herself to look at him. “You don’t…think I’m crazy, do you?” she managed, barely audible.
He used his finger to lift her chin, forcing her to meet his eye. “I know you’re crazy,” he smiled softly. “But I think you might be on to something. I want to read about it on my own, and do some thinking. We’ll talk about it again, okay?” he promised, leaning over to kiss her.
“Okay,” she whispered. Leaning against his shoulder, she nuzzled her head against him. “I’m tired.”
He laughed a little, looking at the now three quarters empty bottle of wine. “I can’t imagine why. I’ll help you to bed,” he said. He helped her off the couch, and into their bedroom. He tucked her in, and kissed her forehead. “I love you, Allie.”
“I love you too, Jacob. Think hard about this, okay?” she murmured, already half asleep.
    “I promise.”

While Allie snored softly in their bedroom, Jacob sat awake at his computer. He’d stumbled across a community of blogs about domestic discipline. There were some written from the wife’s perspective, others from the husband. The more he read, the more interested he became. From what he read, domestic discipline deepened connections between couples, intensified their intimacy, and strengthened trust. It wasn’t easy, especially at the beginning, but worth the work. He read different websites about common ground rules, and bought a few ebooks. He scanned through them, and jotted down notes and questions and points that he’d need to discuss with Allie as he read. He read some things that he definitely didn’t feel like would be beneficial to them at all. He scoured over pages and pages of writing, taking it all in. All the information was a bit overwhelming, but the gist of what he read was that they needed to figure out what was going to work for them as a couple. There were no stead fast rules about how it all should be done, except that he was going to be in charge. He liked the idea of that.
